Athens Monument of the Unknown Soldier to undergo restoration

The Central Council of Modern Monuments has approved a restoration plan for the Monument of the Unknown Soldier in Athens. A key component of the project involves replacing the existing asphalt in the surrounding square with grey Aliveri marble. This change aims to address issues caused by the current surface, which has become slippery for the Evzones (honor guards) and contributes to high temperatures in the area.

The restoration also includes the maintenance of the monument’s stone and metal elements, which have suffered damage from pollution, weather, and vibrations from the metro. The Ministry of National Defense is responsible for the monument's upkeep, while the Ministry of Culture will oversee the conservation of its decorative features.

In a related development, the Central Archaeological Council and the Central Council of Modern Monuments have also approved final studies for the expansion and upgrade of the National Archaeological Museum. This project includes architectural redesign, the creation of new exhibition spaces, and the development of a public garden featuring approximately 250 trees and 5,000 shrubs.
