Greece to restore Phocian Wall at Thermopylae

The Greek Ministry of Culture, through the Ephorate of Antiquities of Phthiotis, has announced a project to stabilize and restore the Phocian Wall at Thermopylae. This monument is a critical element of the site's historical topography, marking the location where the final phase of the Battle of Thermopylae between the Greeks and Persians took place in 480 BC.

The wall is currently in moderate to poor condition due to prolonged exposure to weather conditions and seismic activity. The restoration work aims to preserve the authenticity of the structure while following international restoration principles.

According to Culture Minister Lina Mendoni, the project is part of a broader plan to unify, protect, and highlight the various monuments and archaeological sites of Thermopylae. The goal is to improve the historical landscape's readability and enhance the visitor experience by making the site more accessible and understandable.
