Greece and Bulgaria agree to return Tsar Samuel's remains

Greece and Bulgaria have reached a historic cultural heritage agreement to facilitate the repatriation of the remains of medieval Bulgarian ruler Tsar Samuel. The agreement, which follows decades of negotiations, also includes a reciprocal exchange of religious and cultural artifacts.

The remains, identified as belonging to Tsar Samuel, were discovered in 1965 by archaeologist Nikolaos Moutsopoulos at the Basilica of Saint Achilleios on an island in Lake Prespa. They have been held at the Museum of Byzantine Culture in Thessaloniki. Along with Samuel's remains, other anthropological material from two additional sarcophagi, believed to belong to Tsar Gavril Radomir and other members of the royal family, will also be transferred.

The official handover ceremony is scheduled for the morning of October 3 at the Museum of Byzantine Culture in Thessaloniki, hosted by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and attended by Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev. Following the ceremony, the remains will be transported to Sofia via a C-27J Spartan military aircraft. Upon arrival in Bulgaria, they will be placed in a special sarcophagus in the Saint Sofia Church following an official welcoming procession.
