Greece to see rare Blue Moon on May 31, 2026

A rare astronomical event known as the "Blue Moon" will occur on Sunday, 31 May 2026, when a second full moon appears in the same calendar month. The phenomenon is caused by the lunar cycle (≈29.5 days) not aligning with the month’s length, allowing two full moons in May.

In Greece the moon will reach its highest point at 11:45 PM local time, with the full disc rising over Athens at 21:14 and setting at 05:35. The moon will remain visible throughout the night, appearing relatively low on the horizon in the northern hemisphere compared with higher positions in the southern hemisphere.

Astronomers note that the term "Blue Moon" does not refer to any colour change but simply to this calendrical rarity, and the event will be observable across the country without any special equipment.
