Greece to strengthen Coast Guard presence in the Aegean

Greek Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, Vasilis Kikilias, announced significant measures to strengthen the Hellenic Coast Guard in the Aegean and Dodecanese islands during a visit to Rhodes.

Key developments include the recruitment of approximately 420 to 500 new Coast Guard personnel, with a further round of hiring planned for 2027. To modernize operational capabilities, the government is fast-tracking tenders for new equipment, including open-sea vessels exceeding 80 meters in length—one of which will be permanently based in Rhodes—as well as unmanned surface vessels, underwater drones, and advanced surveillance systems like the National Integrated Maritime Surveillance System (ESOTHE).

These upgrades aim to enhance maritime zone policing, coastal security, environmental protection, and the prevention of illegal fishing. Additionally, the Minister addressed maritime connectivity, noting that the state allocates 168 million euros annually for unprofitable island routes to ensure stability and predictability in ferry services.
