Greece: Toll exemptions for specific groups and services

In Greece, certain categories of drivers and vehicles are exempt from paying highway tolls under specific institutional frameworks. These exemptions primarily target vulnerable groups, emergency services, and state authorities.

Eligible groups for free passage include:

• Permanent residents of specific municipalities located near toll stations, particularly along the Egnatia Odos and its connecting axes. Applications for this exemption must be completed digitally. • Unemployed drivers, provided the vehicle is registered in their name and they are the sole operators, and they hold a valid unemployment card. • Persons with disabilities (PwD) or vehicles serving them, supported by a valid disability parking permit or special identification.

Additionally, emergency and public service vehicles are exempt to ensure vital operations are not hindered. This includes ambulances from EKAB, fire brigade vehicles, police patrols, civil protection units, and military vehicles. State-owned vehicles with special license plates (such as those from Ministries or Parliament) and diplomatic vehicles are also exempt based on international conventions and regulations.
