Greece sees rise in autumn tourism and island travel demand

Greece is experiencing a shift in tourism patterns, with a growing trend toward off-season travel known as ‘fallcation’. Travelers are increasingly choosing September, October, and November to avoid extreme summer heat, heavy crowds, and high costs.

Data from Ferryscanner indicates a significant rise in Greek island bookings for the 2026 summer period, with destinations like Tinos, Paros, and Naxos seeing growth. Notably, Koufonisi saw a 43.4% increase in bookings. The platform also noted that families and larger groups typically benefit from lower average costs per passenger compared to solo travelers or couples.

According to Condé Nast Traveler, citing Virtuoso travel agency data, autumn bookings have surged by 59% compared to last year. This trend is particularly evident in September bookings, which rose by 77%. Beyond the islands, Athens and the Peloponnese are highlighted as prime destinations for those seeking a more authentic Mediterranean experience with milder temperatures and more manageable crowds.
