Greece tourism: Hiking opportunities and new climate taxes
Greece offers diverse travel experiences beyond its famous islands and beaches, particularly through hiking opportunities that connect visitors with local culture, ruins, and traditional landscapes. Travelers are encouraged to plan routes based on terrain and seasonal temperatures, noting that spring and autumn offer more comfortable conditions for outdoor activities.
Regarding travel costs, Greece has replaced the previous bed tax with a higher climate tax. This levy was introduced following recent natural disasters, such as floods and wildfires, to fund disaster relief and environmental protection projects. Additionally, as of summer 2025, an obligatory fee for cruise passengers disembarking at Greek ports has been implemented to promote sustainable tourism and support local infrastructure.
