Greek tourism spending jumps 13% as short trips and senior travel surge in 2025

ELSTAT data show Greek residents increased their travel activity in 2025. Domestic trips rose 7.2 % year‑on‑year, total trips to 9.6 million and overnight stays to 85.8 million, while travel expenditure climbed 11.3 % to €4.12 billion. The average daily spend per trip rose 4.5 %, pushing total tourism revenue above €5.3 billion in the first five months of 2026.

Short‑duration trips (1‑3 nights) grew the fastest, up 26.7 % and accounting for 2.1 million journeys, driven largely by retirees. Travelers aged 65 + recorded a 24 % increase in the number of people making at least one trip and a 28.5 % rise in total trips, becoming the largest growth segment among age groups. The hospitality sector remained the main expense category, absorbing 32.1 % of all tourism spending.

Eurobank’s analysis confirmed a 25.8 % rise in tourism receipts in the first five months of 2026, citing stronger visitor numbers rather than higher per‑capita spend. However, geopolitics in the Middle East and higher energy prices were flagged as potential risks to future demand.
