Greece tourism hits record highs amid digital shift and heritage celebrations

Greece is experiencing a significant surge in tourism, with over 20 million visitors and approximately 13.5 billion euros in revenue reported for the first seven months of 2026. While visitor numbers have increased by 8.6% compared to the previous year, economic experts note that revenue growth does not always scale proportionally with arrivals, citing a decrease in average spending per visitor in certain months.

To celebrate World Tourism Day and the 30th anniversary of Greece’s participation in European Heritage Days, the Ministry of Culture is offering free admission to state-owned archaeological sites and museums on September 26 and 27. This includes major landmarks such as the Acropolis, Delphi, and Ancient Olympia. The Acropolis Museum will also host special free sessions on September 27.

Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni highlighted that the industry is undergoing a digital transformation, utilizing Artificial Intelligence to manage tourist flows and enhance visitor experiences. This technological shift aims to promote sustainability and mitigate the pressures of overtourism in concentrated areas.
