Greece inflation rises to 5% amid energy and housing cost surges

Greece experienced a significant rise in inflation, reaching 5% in September 2026, according to ELSTAT. This increase from 3.8% in August is driven primarily by soaring energy costs, including a 55.2% rise in natural gas and a 53.2% increase in heating oil. Other notable price hikes include a 38.8% rise in motor fuel, a 22.5% increase in gasoline, and a 15% jump in electricity. Additionally, housing costs rose by 14.7%, and hotel prices surged by 29.8%.

In contrast to these inflationary pressures, the Greek economy showed strength in other sectors. Exports in August 2026 grew by 26.7%, reaching €4.26 billion, with the eight-month total exceeding €37 billion. The tourism sector also maintained positive momentum, with international arrivals in August increasing by 2.7% compared to the previous year, totaling nearly 4.9 million arrivals at major airports.

Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and the conflict in Ukraine are cited as key contributors to the energy price volatility, impacting both production and transportation costs.
