Greece tourism surges 38 percent amid climate concerns

Greece is experiencing a significant surge in tourism, with visitor arrivals increasing by 38 percent in the early months of 2026. This represents the highest growth rate on the European continent for that period.

While the influx of travelers provides economic support to a nation heavily dependent on tourism, the Bank of Greece has issued warnings regarding the risks involved. The surge in visitors coincides with increasing climate-related disasters that threaten the country's infrastructure, particularly as the region faces potential El Niño effects and intense fire seasons.

To mitigate seasonal pressure and avoid the sweltering summer heat, there is a growing emphasis on visiting during the off-season. This includes exploring the Peloponnese peninsula, the Thermaic Gulf, or participating in local traditions like olive oil harvests in early spring and island festivals in the autumn.
