Greece tourism shows split growth in accommodation and hospitality sectors

Data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) for the second quarter of 2026 reveals a diverging trend in the Greek tourism sector. While the accommodation industry saw a 6.1% increase in turnover, reaching approximately 3.3 billion euros, the food and beverage (hospitality) sector experienced a 2.5% decline, falling to 3.165 billion euros.

Regional performance varies significantly. The hospitality sector saw its sharpest declines in Thassos (-18.1%), Lesvos (-15.2%), and Argolida (-12.1%). In contrast, some islands like Milos (+12.2%) and Samos (+8.9%) reported growth. In the accommodation sector, Thessaloniki recorded the highest growth at 13.8%, while Mykonos saw a slight decrease of 1.5%.

Broader tourism arrival data for the first seven months of 2026 shows a 3.6% increase in international airport arrivals, totaling 15.7 million. Crete remains the leading destination with 3.2 million arrivals, followed by the Dodecanese and Ionian Islands. Notably, while Athens remains the top destination by volume with 4.88 million arrivals, it recorded a slight decrease of 0.8% compared to the previous year.
