Greece Traffic Police warn of sophisticated SMS phishing scams
A new wave of sophisticated phishing scams is targeting citizens in Greece by impersonating the Traffic Police. Fraudulent SMS messages inform recipients of alleged traffic violations, providing highly convincing details such as the date, time, location, and even the vehicle's speed to appear legitimate.
These messages often offer a fake 50% discount on the fine if paid immediately through a provided link. The primary objective is to direct users to fraudulent websites designed to steal banking credentials, e-banking codes, and other sensitive personal data.
Nikos Rigas, a Traffic Police official, has warned the public that the mention of a discount is a major red flag, as current and previous road codes do not provide for such discounts. He emphasized that the Traffic Police will never request immediate payment or sensitive banking information via text message. Citizens are advised to check for actual violations only through the official Citizen's Mailbox on gov.gr or the Gov.gr Wallet. Authorities have already carried out arrests in connection with these activities, including a recent operation in Spata.
