Greece travel costs: Aegean Airlines price gaps and stable ferry rates
An investigation by iEidiseis has highlighted significant price discrepancies in Aegean Airlines tickets compared to other carriers. The research suggests that the merger between Olympic and Aegean has created a near-monopoly environment, leading to increased costs for passengers. In some instances, the price difference for the same destination and date can reach several hundred euros, with some Aegean flights to Barcelona costing more than competing flights to New York.
Separately, Greek Minister of Maritime Affairs Vasilis Kikilias stated that ferry ticket prices have remained stable for the second consecutive year despite global inflation and energy challenges. He noted that family ticket prices saw reductions of up to 32% to support domestic travel. Kikilias emphasized that travel to Greek islands is a necessity rather than a luxury and highlighted the maritime ministry's focus on safety, noting over 1,800 inspections were conducted.
