Greece-Turkey tensions rise amid military and diplomatic shifts

Discussions regarding potential military tensions between Greece and Turkey have resurfaced, focusing on Turkey’s long-standing strategic objectives and the possibility of a preventive strike.

One perspective highlights Greece’s increased diplomatic and military preparedness. This includes signing maritime zone agreements with Egypt, hosting American forces in Souda and Alexandroupoli, and establishing defense agreements with France. The strengthening of the ‘3+1’ framework involving Cyprus, Israel, and the United States is also noted as a key factor in Greece’s current strategic positioning.

Conversely, there is growing debate and skepticism regarding the rhetoric of a ‘preventive strike’ against Turkey. Critics express concern that such scenarios, promoted within certain political circles, could lead to dangerous escalations. Legal concerns have been raised, noting that under Article 2, Paragraph 4 of the United Nations Charter, the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity of any state is prohibited, and such actions may not fall under the legal definition of self-defense provided in Article 51.
