Greece unemployment benefits undergo changes with new scaled model

Greece is seeing significant debate regarding unemployment benefits, specifically concerning potential restrictions on their duration. Currently, two systems are in operation: the existing regular unemployment benefit and a new scaled model implemented by DYPA.

Under the current regular system, the maximum monthly benefit is 565 euros for the highest income category, while lower income brackets receive 423.75 euros or 282.50 euros. The duration of these benefits varies from 5 to 12 months based on the individual's insurance history and days of employment. A 10% increase is provided for each protected family member.

The new scaled model implemented by DYPA links benefits more closely to salary, working days, and insurance history. In this system, payments start at a higher level and gradually decrease over time. For example, a worker with an average gross monthly income of 980 euros would receive approximately 719 euros during the first quarter, followed by decreasing amounts of 616.25 euros, 513.75 euros, and 411 euros in subsequent quarters.
