Greece unemployment rises to 9.5% in April 2026, female rate jumps to 13.7%

Seasonally adjusted unemployment in Greece reached 9.5% in April 2026, up from 9.0% a year earlier, according to ELSTAT data. The overall number of unemployed rose to 452,305, an increase of 26,607 (6.3%) compared with April 2025, although it fell by 49,471 from March 2026.

Male unemployment fell to 5.9% from 7.3% a year earlier, while female unemployment rose sharply to 13.7% from 11.0%, widening the gender gap. The employed population was 4,318,719, showing a marginal decline of 0.1% year‑on‑year. People outside the labour force numbered 2,949,960.

Among younger workers, unemployment for ages 15‑24 stood at 18.4%, a slight improvement from 19.1% the previous year. For the 25‑74 age group, the rate increased to 9.0% from 8.4% a year earlier. ELSTAT expects the overall rate to ease with the upcoming tourist season.
