Greece Ministry of National Defense unveils bioclimatic building renovation
The Greek Ministry of National Defense has inaugurated the architectural renovation of the northern facade of its central building at the Alexandros Papagos camp. The project, which aims to improve energy efficiency and modernize facilities, was funded by a 10 million euro donation from Piraeus Bank.
Designed by sculptor and Aristotle University professor Kostas Varotsos in collaboration with architect Chrysanthi Asproulopoulou, the bioclimatic facade utilizes 1,308 aluminum louvers and over 31,200 square meters of thermal insulation to reduce energy consumption. The renovation also includes the creation of the “Ark of National Memory” monument, landscape redesign, and new architectural lighting designed by Varotsos and Eleftheria Dekko.
During the ceremony, Defense Minister Nikos Dendias linked the building's transformation to the broader “Agenda 2030” reforms intended to modernize the Greek Armed Forces. Dendias also announced a request to the Hellenic Shipowners' Association for a 250 million euro donation to enhance the operational capabilities of the Hellenic Navy.
