Greece updates nutritional rules for school canteens

Greece has implemented new regulations for products and portion sizes in school canteens following an amendment to a Ministerial Decision. The changes resulted from collaboration between the National Nutrition Committee and the Panhellenic Federation of Canteens of Public and Private Schools (POKDIS), aimed at facilitating the application of nutritional guidelines and combating childhood obesity.

Key updates include:

• Sesame, multi-grain, and pretzel-style rings: Recommended whole grain options with a maximum weight of 80 grams. • Popcorn: Permitted only in secondary education canteens. Portions are limited to 40 grams and must meet strict nutritional criteria, including no added sugars and specific limits on total fats, sodium, and saturated fats. • Bread, pita, and tortillas: Includes white, whole grain, and multi-grain varieties, as well as Arabic pita and tortillas. Whole grain is prioritized, and gluten-free options are permitted, with a maximum weight of 80 grams. • Pies and savory pastries: Cheese pies, vegetable pies (such as spinach or pumpkin), and tyrokoulouro are permitted with a maximum portion size of 100 grams due to high caloric content. • Sandwiches and toast: Allows for roasted or boiled chicken and turkey, but prohibits processed deli meats.
