Greece to launch holiday supermarket discount initiative

The Hellenic Authority for Market Monitoring and Consumer Protection is preparing a new initiative titled ‘Holidays for All’ to provide relief to household budgets during the Christmas and New Year period. Expected to launch after mid-December, the program aims to offer discounts of up to 25% on selected products.

The proposed list of discounted items includes traditional holiday sweets such as melomakarona, kourabiedes, and tsoureki, as well as various meats including turkey, lamb, beef, pork, and chicken. Other categories under consideration are dairy products, beverages, and pantry staples like rice, pasta, and flour.

The final selection of products and specific price reductions will depend on ongoing negotiations with businesses. This initiative follows a voluntary National Price Reduction Initiative, which saw approximately 1,400 product codes participate in its previous cycle. Additionally, a new digital application named ‘My kataggelies’ is being introduced to allow citizens to report unjustified price increases.
