Greece electricity wholesale prices surge amid rising demand

Greece is experiencing a sharp surge in wholesale electricity prices, which rose by 53.09% in a single day to reach 167.55 EUR/MWh. The market saw even higher peaks, with prices hitting 173.73 EUR/MWh on August 25, marking the highest levels recorded in 2026. The average wholesale price for the first 25 days of August is approximately 128.51 EUR/MWh, nearly 17% higher than in July.

This volatility is attributed to increased demand as consumers return to urban centers following the August holiday period. While renewable energy sources currently dominate the production mix at 52.63%, followed by natural gas at 27.77%, the rapid increase in costs is creating pressure on September electricity bills. Consumers on variable pricing plans are most at risk, though fixed-price contracts offer some protection.

The Greek government is considering interventions to mitigate the impact on households, including the potential use of 500 million euros from the energy escape clause for 2027. Discussions include reinstating subsidies or implementing a new 'electricity pass' based on income and consumption criteria. Meanwhile, business groups are calling for more permanent measures to address rising operational costs.
