Greece vehicle insurance coverage for natural disasters doubles in one year
The proportion of vehicle insurance policies in Greece providing coverage against natural disasters has nearly doubled within one year, reaching 51.5% as of June 2026. This follows a legislative mandate introduced on June 1, 2025, which made insurance against floods and wildfires mandatory for vehicles.
Data from the Association of Greek Insurance Companies (EAPE), representing 99% of the market's total motor liability production, shows that coverage rose from 27.5% at the start of the mandate to 51.5% by late June 2026. Of the 28 insurance companies surveyed, 22 specialize in separating specific coverages within their portfolios.
As of June 30, 2026, flood coverage was integrated into 58.9% of policies, while wildfire coverage reached 58.7%. Additionally, earthquake coverage, which is not legally mandatory, has seen a penetration rate of 25.6%, reflecting a broader trend of drivers seeking increased protection against climate-related risks.
