Greece veterinary authorities warn of sheep scab spread risk

Greek veterinary authorities have issued a warning regarding the potential spread of sheep scab due to increased mobility during the August 15th religious holidays. Officials warn that the movement of people, vehicles, and animals during festivals and mass gatherings could create new transmission routes for the disease.

The Veterinary Directorate of the Epirus Region has called on livestock farmers to maintain high vigilance and strictly implement biosecurity measures. Specific recommendations for farmers attending public celebrations include changing footwear and clothing and washing hands before and after entering breeding facilities to prevent the virus from being carried into flocks.

Sheep scab continues to cause significant losses in the Greek livestock sector. Recent outbreaks have been recorded in various regions, including cases in Preveza, Kastoria, Rhodope, and Arcadia.
