Greece warns of identity card scams involving fake fines

Authorities in Greece are warning citizens about a phishing scam involving fraudulent messages regarding the issuance of new identity cards. These messages, which may appear to come from a sender labeled ‘GOV – GR’, falsely claim that citizens must pay a fine to avoid the cancellation of their identification or to complete the issuance process.

There is no legal requirement or fine for citizens who have not yet replaced their old identity cards. While old laminated identity cards will remain valid for domestic use in Greece until September 2027, they can no longer be used for international travel as of August 3 due to security standard requirements.

Citizens are advised to remain vigilant and avoid clicking on any links contained within suspicious SMS or email communications.
