Greece warns of safety risks as foreign lifeguards hired without proper certification

Tourism operators and staffing agencies are recruiting foreign lifeguards for Greek islands and hotel resorts for the 2026 summer season, offering contracts that include accommodation, meals and travel expenses. The advertised requirement is limited to possession of an EU passport or a valid residence permit, with no clear verification of the candidates’ lifeguard certification or proficiency in Greek.

Greek law mandates that lifeguards working at hotel pools or organized beaches must complete training at a recognized lifesaving school, obtain a certification or licence from the Coast Guard, and demonstrate sufficient knowledge of the Greek language to communicate effectively in emergencies. Experts warn that the current hiring practice could delay rescue actions, increase the risk of mishandling incidents such as drownings or cardiac arrests, and jeopardise tourist safety.
