Greek fire agencies warn of very high wildfire risk across Attica, Crete and multiple regions
The Greek fire administration has announced that the anti‑fire period runs until 31 October and that the third month is now underway. Conditions for the coming days are expected to be “extremely dangerous” and the General Secretariat of Civil Protection’s daily fire‑risk map shows very high (category 4) or high (category 3) risk for large parts of the country, including Attica, Crete, the islands of Chios, Lesbos and many mainland prefectures.
Authorities urge citizens to avoid any outdoor activity that could start a fire, to consult local fire services for prohibited or conditional activities, and to follow protection measures. Heavy administrative fines and possible criminal penalties will be imposed for violations, and extensive checks and patrols will continue under Fire Service Decree 9/2024 and Decree 19/2024.
A separate incident on 16 July 2026 near Agia Paraskevi (Vylion) in the municipality of Mandra‑Eidyllia triggered a large response: 115 firefighters, 35 vehicles, five aircraft and two helicopters were deployed, the blaze was contained within about 40 minutes and the area remains at high risk (category 3). The fire is under investigation by the anti‑arson unit.
A heat wave is expected to bring temperatures up to 40 °C, increasing fire danger, and the fire services have appealed for public cooperation during the upcoming hot days.
