Greece warns Turkey against violating sovereign rights FAST-MOVING

Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Geropetritis has issued a strong warning to Turkey, stating that any attempt to violate Greek sovereign rights will be met with any necessary means. In a series of interviews, Geropetritis emphasized that the era of 'passive diplomacy' in Greece has ended, asserting that the country now pursues peace and dialogue from a position of strength.

Geropetritis characterized Turkey's recent establishment of maritime parks in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean as illegal, noting they extend into undemarcated international waters on the Greek continental shelf. He clarified that the policy of 'calm waters' was intended as a tool to serve national interests and reduce tensions, rather than an end in itself. He noted that this period of de-escalation allowed Greece to strengthen its economy and significantly upgrade its military capabilities, including the acquisition of Rafale jets, upgraded F-16s, Belharra frigates, and the upcoming F-35s.

While maintaining that the Athens Declaration remains an active framework for structured dialogue, Geropetritis stressed that communication does not imply a concession of Greek legal positions. He also reaffirmed Greece's right to extend its territorial waters to 12 nautical miles, stating this would be exercised at an appropriate time.

Opposition figures, including PASOK's Dimitris Mantzos, criticized the government, arguing that it is only now realizing the limitations of the 'calm waters' approach and suggesting that the administration's previous messaging provided Turkey with opportunities to pursue revisionist aims.
