Greece faces severe storms and heavy rainfall

Greece is facing a significant deterioration in weather conditions, characterized by heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and powerful winds. The National Meteorological Service (EMY) has issued warnings for several regions, including an orange alert for Evia and parts of Central Greece.

Crete is expected to be at the center of the storm, with a Red Code status in effect from Wednesday night through Sunday, October 4. Meteorologists predict that Crete could receive up to 136 mm of rainfall on Saturday, October 3. Due to the severe weather, all schools in the Chania and Rethymno regional units have been closed for in-person operation on Thursday, October 1.

The Aegean Sea will also experience high winds, with gusts potentially reaching 8 to 9 Beaufort, which may impact maritime activities. Temperatures are expected to drop across the country, bringing autumn-like conditions to much of the region.
