Greece weather transition brings storms and heat fluctuations
Greece is experiencing a significant weather transition as September begins. Following a period of intense heat, with temperatures in Laconia reaching 39.3 degrees Celsius, a shift toward more autumnal conditions is expected.
Starting Thursday, September 3, organized instability will bring heavy rains, thunderstorms, and potential hail to much of the mainland, including Macedonia, Thessaly, Epirus, and the Peloponnese. While these phenomena may cause localized disruption, they are expected to bring a temporary drop in temperatures.
However, the cooling effect is predicted to be short-lived. Forecasts indicate a new wave of heat returning by Sunday, September 6, with temperatures in Western Greece potentially reaching 40 degrees Celsius. Additionally, sea temperatures in regions like Crete remain notably high due to the water's heat capacity, staying warmer than in June despite the cooling air.
Authorities have also noted increased risks in certain areas, such as Thessaly, where high fire risk levels were issued during the preceding hot period. Residents are advised to remain cautious of sudden weather changes and local wind conditions, which may reach up to 8 Beaufort in the Aegean.
