Greece heat wave brings temperatures up to 40°C
Greece is experiencing its first major heat wave of the summer, with temperatures expected to reach 40°C in several regions. The National Meteorological Service (EMY) has issued warnings for high temperatures, noting that 155 out of 580 stations recorded values of 37°C or higher. In Agrinio, temperatures are forecast to hit 40°C.
Meteorologists warn that the heat wave could persist through the end of August and potentially into the first days of September. While some northern and eastern areas may see a slight reprieve due to increased winds (Meltemi), Western Greece and the Peloponnese are expected to remain under intense heat. In Crete, extreme temperature fluctuations were observed, with a nearly 29°C difference recorded between coastal and mountainous areas within a few hours.
Authorities have warned of an increased risk of forest fires due to high temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds. In Athens, air-conditioned halls have been made available to the public, and water stations have been established for animals to mitigate the impact of the heat.
