Greece weather instability brings heavy rain and storms

Greece is experiencing significant weather instability caused by a low-pressure system in the Mediterranean. Between September 15 and 16, 2026, heavy rains, thunderstorms, and localized hail affected several regions, including the Ionian Islands, Corfu, and parts of Western and Southern Greece. Notable phenomena included double waterspouts near the Othonoi islands.

As the weather pattern shifts, Crete and the Dodecanese remain central to the ongoing instability, with forecasts predicting continued localized showers and thunderstorms. Some areas may also experience the transport of Saharan dust. However, a gradual improvement is expected starting September 17, with sunshine returning to most of the mainland and temperatures beginning to rise toward the weekend, potentially reaching 31-32 degrees Celsius in some locations.

Civil Protection authorities have issued warnings regarding the potential for property damage from wind, flooding, and hail, advising citizens to secure outdoor objects and exercise caution during heavy storms.
