Greece issues high wildfire risk warning for multiple regions
The General Secretariat for Civil Protection has issued a high wildfire risk warning (Category 3) for much of Greece for Sunday, September 13, 2026.
Key regions under high alert include Attica, Kythira, Boeotia, Euboea, Phocis, Aetolia-Acarnania, Preveza, and Thesprotia. Other areas facing significant risk include Corinthia, Argolida, Ilia, Messenia, Kilkis, Mount Athos, Thasos, Phthiotis, Magnesia, Chalkidiki, Thessaloniki, Achaea, and Laconia. Several islands, including Lesvos, Chios, Samos, Ikaria, and parts of the Ionian and Rhodes, are also included in the high-risk assessment.
Authorities have issued strong recommendations for citizens to avoid outdoor activities that could cause accidental fires. Prohibited or high-risk actions include burning dry grass or branches, using machinery that produces sparks (such as chainsaws or welding equipment), using outdoor grills, and disposing of lit cigarettes. In the Preveza region, specific bans on movement from sunset to sunrise have been implemented in several forested areas to mitigate risk. Citizens are urged to report any smoke or fire immediately to the Fire Service via 199 or the emergency number 112.
