Greece wildfires: One year later, residents await compensation

One year after devastating wildfires struck Patras, Western Achaia, and Erymanthos, a significant gap remains between infrastructure recovery and individual compensation. While the state has allocated 4.5 million euros to the Municipality of Patras for public works—including road repairs in Vouteni and Aroi and soil stabilization projects—many residents report they have yet to receive aid.

Local citizens in areas such as Moireika, Kamenitsa Alisou, and Vouteni express desperation over unpaid claims for destroyed homes, livestock, and olive groves. Some farmers face ongoing difficulties due to damaged irrigation networks that remain unrepaired a year later.

Beyond physical and economic damage, the fires have left lasting psychological scars on the population. The long-term environmental impact includes the loss of hundreds of thousands of acres of forest and the disruption of ecosystems, contributing to a growing focus on the mental health consequences of the climate crisis.
