Greece's wildfire risk rises as low vegetation and rare polar meltemi winds intensify fires

Scientists say the surge in low‑lying vegetation after winter and spring rainfalls acted as a hidden fuel source for the 2024‑2026 Greek wildfires, while the continued presence of combustible material in unmanaged forest areas remains a core problem for fire spread.

A rare “polarized meltemi” wind episode in late July 2026 produced gusts over 72 km/h and persisted for several days, greatly increasing the speed and reach of the fires and grounding firefighting aircraft.

On 7 August 2026 Greek authorities issued a fire‑risk alert covering 28 regions—including Attica, the Aegean islands and parts of the mainland—citing high temperatures, prolonged drought and strong northerly winds. The European Union has activated its RescEU stock of firefighting aircraft and helicopters, and the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) reports more than 434 000 ha burned since early 2026.
