Greece wildlife sightings: Jellyfish and vultures reported on beaches

Tourists in Greece are encountering unusual wildlife sightings this summer, including a specific species of jellyfish and landing vultures.

The Cotylorhiza tuberculata, often called the ‘fried egg jellyfish’ due to its yellow or orange central protrusion, has been spotted in Greek waters. While its appearance can alarm swimmers, the species is generally not considered dangerous to humans, though it may cause mild skin irritation. Experts link the early appearance of these jellyfish to rising sea temperatures.

Additionally, large vultures have been landing on crowded Greek beaches near tourists. According to the animal welfare organization ANIMA, these are primarily young birds suffering from exhaustion and dehydration due to extreme summer heat. In Crete alone, more than 20 young vultures have required medical assistance recently. The organization noted that while the sight of birds with wingspans exceeding two meters can be intimidating, the animals are seeking rest rather than acting aggressively.
