Greece wiretapping scandal reaches European Court of Human Rights

Journalist Thanasis Koukakis and former Transport Minister Christos Spirtzis have filed applications with the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) regarding the Greek wiretapping scandal.

Koukakis is challenging the Greek state over surveillance conducted by the National Intelligence Service (EYP) and the use of Predator spyware. His legal team has raised concerns regarding judicial impartiality, specifically noting that prosecutor Constantinos Tzavellas, who previously signed orders to lift Koukakis’s communication privacy in 2020, was later involved in handling the case files related to the wiretapping investigation.

Spirtzis filed his application shortly after Koukakis, alleging institutional decay and government influence over the judiciary. He criticized the refusal of the Supreme Court's Judicial Council to rule on requests for the recusal of prosecutors involved in the matter and accused the administration of attempting to cover up the espionage scandal.
