Greece working retirees exceed 300,000

Data from e-EFKA for September 2026 indicates that the number of working retirees in Greece has surpassed 300,000. This represents a significant increase compared to previous years.

Officials attribute this trend to a new regulatory framework implemented on January 1, 2024, under Article 114 of Law 5078/2023. This legislation abolished the previous 30% pension reduction for retirees who chose to continue working. Prior to this change, only approximately 36,000 retirees had declared employment.

The new system allows retirees to combine their pension with earned income without penalties, facilitating the continued use of professional expertise in the labor market. This shift is expected to benefit businesses through the retention of experienced workers while strengthening social security revenues and reducing undeclared labor.
