AADE launches AI-driven digital unit to combat tax evasion

Greece’s Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) has launched a new digital structure to combat tax evasion through advanced technology. The newly established General Directorate of Digital Services and Systems (GD ΨΗΦΥΣ) replaces the former e-Government directorate, centralizing digital platforms, data systems, and technological infrastructure.

The reorganization integrates Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data analytics, and automated risk-assessment models into the authority’s core operations. These tools will allow the AADE to create comprehensive economic profiles for taxpayers by cross-referencing income declarations with bank deposits, card transactions, professional activities, and import/export data.

By shifting from reactive audits to predictive modeling, the system aims to identify suspicious patterns and high-risk cases in real time. This digital transformation is intended to streamline internal workflows, improve interoperability with other public agencies via modern APIs, and enhance tax compliance while reducing bureaucracy for citizens and businesses.
