Greece's 'cave method' offers simple home cooling during heatwaves

Experts advise that the “cave method,” which treats a house like a natural cave, can significantly lower indoor temperatures during heatwaves. The approach relies on keeping direct sunlight out by closing curtains, blinds and windows on the sun‑exposed side of the home during the hottest part of the day, and allowing cool air to enter when outdoor temperatures drop, typically after sunset or early in the morning.

“Heath Showman, founder of Lifestyle Blinds, says, ‘The cave method is a simple way to keep your home cooler by natural means during hot days.’" Kara Gammell, a home‑insurance specialist, adds that windows and external doors should remain closed while the outside temperature exceeds the indoor level, and only be opened for cross‑ventilation when the air outside becomes cooler. The technique also recommends creating a cross‑draft by opening windows on opposite sides of the house once the temperature falls, allowing trapped warm air to escape without sacrificing natural light or interior style.
