Greece's current account deficit widens to €8.3bn in Q1 2026
The Bank of Greece reported that the current‑account deficit expanded to €8.3 billion in the January‑April 2026 quarter, up from €7.3 billion in the same period a year earlier. Exports rose 12 % in current terms, outpacing a 3.6 % increase in imports, and the goods balance improved.
Tourism contributed strongly: arrivals of non‑resident travelers were 27.1 % higher and travel‑related receipts 36.9 % higher than in Q1 2025, widening the services surplus. However, the primary‑income balance turned to a larger deficit as net receipts from interest, dividends and profits fell roughly by half. The capital‑account surplus narrowed to €358.5 million.
Foreign direct investment inflows reached €4.4 billion and portfolio investments €4.9 billion during the period. Foreign‑exchange reserves climbed to €21.4 billion at the end of April, up from €15.8 billion a year earlier.
