Greek Deputy PM Kostis Chatzidakis unveils four property‑market reforms

Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Chatzidakis announced a package of four measures aimed at speeding up property transfers in Greece and easing the housing shortage.

The reforms include ending long‑standing state claims on private land, allowing inheritance tax to be paid from the sale price of a property, and setting rules for the sale of seized properties – requiring that at least 25 % of the outstanding debt be recovered by the notary. A final measure creates a one‑stop‑shop system for notaries handling property transactions, accompanied by higher fees for their services.

Chatzidakis framed the initiatives under law 5293/2026 as part of the government’s “Agenda 2030” and a “state more friendly to citizens.” He stressed that the state must treat people as “citizens, not subjects,” and noted that these technical steps complement a broader program of 45 actions targeting the housing problem.
