Greece's draft AI Act faces scrutiny over oversight role of data protection authority

Greece is consulting on a draft law that would implement the EU AI Act at the national level. The proposal places the Data Protection Authority at the centre of AI oversight, tasks it with compliance assessment for high‑risk systems, and creates a coordination centre, a public AI registry, an AI observatory and a regulatory sandbox. Commenters have warned that concentrating such technical responsibilities in a body primarily focused on personal data may create conflicts of interest and exceed its expertise, and they question how overlapping duties among agencies will be managed.

At the same time, United Nations Secretary‑General António Guterres urged stronger global governance of artificial intelligence at a two‑day UN‑hosted dialogue in Geneva. He said AI is developing faster than any regulator can track and warned of risks to economies, labour markets, elections and stability, calling for internationally coordinated rules to protect children and ensure accountability.

Both developments highlight growing concerns over who will supervise increasingly powerful AI systems and the need for clear, coordinated regulatory frameworks at national and international levels.
