Greece to respond to Turkish provocations and proceed with Cyprus power link
Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis stated that Greece will respond decisively to any Turkish provocations or arbitrariness. Addressing the ongoing tensions in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean, Gerapetritis emphasized that the Athens Declaration remains a functional mechanism for structured dialogue intended to prevent escalations from turning into full-scale crises.
Regarding the planned electrical interconnection between Greece and Cyprus, the Minister clarified that the project will proceed according to the contractor's schedule, with cable laying potentially beginning in 2026. He asserted that under international law, the project does not require permission from Turkey and that Athens is prepared for various response scenarios from Ankara.
While Gerapetritis noted that dialogue has helped reduce violations and manage migration issues, he acknowledged that Turkey has not abandoned long-standing positions such as the 'Blue Homeland' doctrine. Meanwhile, the opposition party SYRIZA criticized the government's approach, arguing that the current foreign policy lacks a clear strategic plan and fails to address Turkish challenges effectively.
