Greece's forest flammability falls after heavy July rains

Heavy rainfall on 25 July 2026 sharply reduced the moisture content of dead fuel (leaves, twigs, needles) across Greece, lowering the flammability of forest vegetation.

Data from the Meteo unit of the National Observatory of Athens, combined with advanced moisture‑content models, produced daily fuel‑moisture maps for the whole country. Maps dated 18 July showed very high flammability, while the 25 July maps reflected a significant drop following the intense showers.

Researchers noted that rising temperatures in the coming days could raise flammability again, underscoring the need for continuous monitoring to support fire‑prevention planning.
