Greek electricity wholesale price jumps 57.5% in a day
On 3 August 2026 the Greek wholesale electricity price surged 57.5 % on the Energy Stock Exchange, climbing to 153.96 €/MWh from 97.78 €/MWh the previous day. Prices swung between a low of 0.01 €/MWh and a peak of about 300.86 €/MWh in the evening.
The spike reflects heightened market volatility, with renewable sources (RES) accounting for roughly 55 % of generation during the day, while natural‑gas‑fired plants supplied about 29 % of the mix. The European gas market remained comparatively stable, with TTF contracts around 59‑60 €/MWh.
Retail “green” electricity tariffs for August also rose after an 18.3 % month‑on‑month increase in the wholesale price (June to July). Most suppliers kept rates unchanged – DEI at 13.84 ¢/kWh (15.4 ¢/kWh above 200 kWh) and Iro at 14.7 ¢/kWh – while others lifted prices: Protergia to 16.9 ¢/kWh, NRG to 20.9 ¢/kWh, ZENITH to 23.8 ¢/kWh. The share of households on fixed‑price (“blue”) contracts doubled to 27.8 %.
