Greece's Independent Authority for Public Revenue intensifies indirect tax audits
The Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) is implementing coordinated audits targeting bank accounts, withdrawals, purchases, and cash payments to identify undeclared income. These audits utilize indirect technical methods to reconstruct the complete financial profile of taxpayers, including their family members.
Auditors examine the relationship between bank deposits, cash expenditures for personal, family, and professional needs, and declared income. To determine taxable amounts, officials record total deposits and subtract non-taxable inflows, such as loan disbursements or offsetting banking transactions. They then add cash payments made for various expenses and compare the resulting figure against declared income. Any discrepancy that cannot be justified by legal and proven sources of funding may be classified as undeclared taxable income.
