Greece's maritime and industrial roles highlighted at major conferences

At the International Maritime Transport Conference in Thessaloniki, EU Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism Apostolos Tzitzikostas emphasized the strategic importance of Greece in the maritime sector. He noted that the Greek-owned fleet represents approximately one-fifth of global capacity and highlighted two new EU initiatives: the European Strategy for Ports and the Industrial Strategy for Shipping. These policies aim to bolster competitiveness, security, and sustainability within the European maritime landscape.

Tzitzikostas also addressed the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, stating that the EU has responded through coordination between the Commission, member states, and the International Energy Agency to ensure supply security. While he noted that there is currently no immediate shortage of oil or fuel in the EU, he cautioned that the situation remains volatile.

Separately, at the ‘Greece of Tomorrow’ conference, MEVGAL President Marya Chatzakou discussed the potential for Northern Greece to become a production and export hub. She highlighted a significant investment of 150-160 million euros by MEVGAL and emphasized the need for a stable business environment and increased productivity to leverage Greece's agricultural wealth and high-quality products in international markets.
