Greece's SYRIZA Party Faces Internal Push for Emergency Committee Meeting

Seventy‑three members of Greece’s SYRIZA party have submitted a request to the party secretary demanding an extraordinary meeting of the Central Committee within the next fifteen days. The request was presented in two separate letters: one bearing 65 signatures from MP Pavlos Polakēs and another with eight signatures from members outside the party’s internal opposition.

The signatories argue that “society does not need a SYRIZA that waits for developments, it needs a SYRIZA that shapes them,” and they warn that the party is not yet under any deadline nor a subordinate political organization. The documents also criticize the stance of party leader Alexis Tsipras, suggesting his statements are not helping to build a victorious front. The move reflects growing factional tension within the party as it seeks to set a new course ahead of the upcoming decisions of its governing bodies.
