Greece's tourism surge strains Crete hospitals and reveals digital work‑card fraud

During the peak of the summer tourism season, hospitals on the island of Crete are experiencing severe pressure. The influx of visitors, combined with the regular medical needs of the local population, has led to a sharp rise in emergency department visits, traffic accidents, heat‑related illnesses and injuries. Staff shortages mean medical, nursing and auxiliary personnel are working exhausting shifts to cope with the demand, prompting calls for permanent staffing increases.

At the same time, authorities are investigating a new form of labour abuse in the tourism and hospitality sector. Employers are manipulating the Digital Work Card system to under‑report working hours and deny rest days, often by falsifying data before it reaches the national "Ergani" platform. The practice was highlighted by George Hotzoglou, president of the Pan‑Hellenic Federation of Workers in Food and Tourism, who submitted a detailed complaint to the labour inspectorate.

Both issues underscore the strain that the booming tourist season is placing on Greece’s public services and employment regulations.
